Credit Card APR Review Checklist: Match Every Rate to Its Balance
Read multiple APR categories, promotional dates and payment allocation terms, and understand the limits of a single-rate debt planning record.
Payooo is for planning and tracking. It is not financial advice.
Record an APR together with the balance category it applies to, the effective date and any promotional expiry. A card-wide balance plus a single attractive rate can produce a misleading estimate when purchases and transfers follow different terms.
- Locate each balance category and its applicable APR.
- Record the exact promotion end date and later rate.
- Keep the account minimum and due date separate from category balances.
- Ask how the issuer allocates the payment before assuming you can target a category.
The CFPB explains that US credit-card statements identify categories with different APRs and their associated balances. Its guidance also distinguishes minimum-payment allocation from allocation of amounts above the minimum. These are US rules; check local requirements and the agreement for your own account.
Read the rate table alongside the account summary
Start with the latest statement, not an old offer email. Find the purchase, transfer and cash-advance categories that actually have balances. A rate listed in the agreement does not necessarily mean you currently owe money in that category.
Record whether the rate is variable or promotional. For a promotion, capture the expiry and the rate stated to follow it. Also note the account's single required payment and due date; do not manufacture separate creditor minimums for each category.
Example: a card with three rate categories
This fictitious USD statement has a $2,500 total balance, a $75 account minimum and an October 12 due date. The sample rates and dates are invented for explanation, not offers or Payooo app data.
- The 0% transfer offer does not make the full $2,500 interest-free.
- The $75 minimum belongs to the account, not to each of the three rows.
- A proposed $150 payment does not mean all $150 reaches the transfer balance.
| Category | Balance USD | Current APR | Date or term to retain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purchases | 800 | 24% | Variable; check later statements |
| Balance transfer | 1,500 | 0% | Ends January 15, 2027; then 26% in this example |
| Cash advance | 200 | 29% | Separate category; review applicable fees |
Keep a planner's simplification visible
Payooo's debt model supports one APR at a time, with a promotional end date and a subsequent rate. It does not reproduce simultaneous sub-balances or the issuer's allocation waterfall. A single-rate estimate for this example would therefore omit important detail.
Keep the category breakdown in account notes or a separate worksheet. Splitting categories into planning entries does not create separate real debts or let you direct issuer allocation; it also risks duplicating the account minimum. Resolve a mixed-rate card with the issuer's figures before relying on a payoff projection.
Review again when terms change
Calendar the expiry as a review event, not as a payment confirmation. Ask which transactions the promotion covers and whether new purchases lose a grace period. Do not confuse a 0% APR promotion with deferred interest.
When a new statement arrives, check rates and category balances again. Many cards use daily interest calculations, so an APR/12 estimate is not the statement charge. Reorder your planning targets only after the changed terms are understood.
Inside the app
Use Payooo to retain a manual debt overview and compare clearly labeled scenarios. Its rate and promotion fields can help with a single-rate balance or a rate transition, but they do not replace a mixed-rate card statement.

A useful APR record answers three questions: which balance, which rate and until when. An unresolved category is a reason to check the agreement, not to guess a blended rate.
FAQ
Common questions
Yes. Purchases, transfers and cash advances may have different rates and balances. Review the current statement and agreement instead of assigning the advertised promotional APR to everything.
A Payooo debt record has one current APR, with a promotional end date and a post-promotion rate. It is not a model of simultaneous issuer-managed balance categories or their payment allocation.
No. That can be a simplified monthly planning assumption, but many issuers calculate interest using daily balances. Use statement interest to reconcile an actual period.
